Project History

2003 – BUS contracted with Avail for our 1-2-3 approach to needs assessment, procurement assistance, and systems integration services to help BGCAA realize their ITS vision. BUS had just completed deployments of Trapeze’s PASS and FLEET software applications, but came to Avail when it was time to integrate a mobile data solution that would allow the BUS to move towards a paperless operation with trip data transmitted electronically to and from their vehicle fleet. This task was made more daunting by the fact that the BUS service area comprises 12 mostly rural counties covering thousands of square miles. Avail’s first task was to come up to speed with BUS operations and to define the project goals and requirements, outlining these in a technology adoption plan for the BUS.

2004 – BUS contracted specifically with Avail to perform a communications study to investigate a mobile data solution as a first step in making our technology adoption plan a reality. Avail evaluated both public data network and private radio solutions, working with the BUS to carefully weigh all considerations including performance, up-front costs, and recurring costs before making a final solution decision. The results of our study led the BUS to opt for a multi-tower private radio solution, and Avail worked closely with local and State agencies to obtain equipment space on suitable towers at reasonable rates.

2005 – BUS contracted once again with Avail to act as their system integrator to assist them with procuring a mobile data system and then be the single point of contact responsible for deploying the selected technologies and the multi-tower data radio system. The BUS chose Digital Dispatch’s Mobile Data System including their Wireless Network Gateway (WiNG) and Vector 530 mobile data computer, and radio system components from Vertex Standard. Avail has successfully completed pilot testing of the system over the data radio system in March 2006 and is currently rolling out the remaining vehicle fleet.
