WHEELS is the mass transit system for disabled individuals in Lexington-Fayette County and currently operates a fleet of approximately 30 demand response vehicles.
- 1-2-3 approach for needs assessment, procurement assistance, and systems integration services for Paratransit ITS technologies

- Digital Dispatch Mobile Data System including Wireless Network Gateway (WiNG) and Vector 530 mobile data computers

2004 – WHEELS contracted with Avail for our 1-2-3 approach for needs assessment, procurement assistance, and systems integration to help them realize their ITS technology vision. Avail began with the initial review of WHEELS’ existing technologies, procedures, services, and practices. After Avail completed this review Avail Technologies completed the needs assessment portion of the project and after identifying those needs began the task of outlining the WHEELS’ procurement specifications and development of the RFP, guiding WHEELS through the entire procurement process. The result of this effort was WHEELS’ selection of RouteMatch’s TS Computer Aided Reservation, Scheduling, and Dispatching System, Digital Dispatch’s Mobile Data System with Vector 530 mobile data computers and WiNG wireless gateway controller interfaced to a private data radio system consisting of Vertex VX-3200 radios and a VXR7000 repeater. What makes Avail unique is that WHEELS maintained one contract with Avail so that we were their single point of contact and we were the system integrator responsible for successfully integrating these technologies into WHEELS’ operation. WHEELS transitioned to paper-based use of the TS system in September 2005 with final system acceptance in March 2006. The system is fully operational and is under warranty and support with Avail.
2006 – WHEELS expanded the system with the purchase of an additional five vehicles.
