Area Transportation Authority of North Central Pennsylvania
Johnsonburg, PA
Avail customer since 2003
The Area Transportation Authority is successful in providing public transportation in the most rural region of the state of Pennsylvania (Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, McKean, and Potter counties). ATA has been improving its service to the six counties since its inception in 1976. Proof came in the summer of 2001 when ATA was recognized by APTA for being the most improved rural transportation provider in the nation in terms of safety. ATA currently operates a fleet of approximately 90 vehicles.
1-2-3 approach to needs assessment, procurement assistance, and systems integration for Demand Response/Paratransit ITS technology
- Transched Transview Computer Aided Reservation, Scheduling, and Dispatching System
- DRS Technologies Hammerhead Ruggedized Tablet PC's
2003 - Avail Technologies, Inc. was hired to provide technical guidance and systems integration services to ATA as they acquire and implement an Advanced Public Transportation System (APTS). ATA was the first rural transit authority in Pennsylvania, perhaps even the first regional rural transit system in the nation. Operating in a six-county region, ATA serves an area of 5091 square miles in mountainous and dispersed terrain. The geography/topography of the area creates numerous operational and technical challenges including poor radio coverage (at best 60% of the service area), untimely data and revenue collection as well as reporting, and flat or diminishing ridership trends. ATA is applying ITS technologies to automate and streamline their operations to help meet their goal of providing safe, accessible, convenient, and affordable service in this large rural area. In the first phase of this project Avail assisted ATA with evaluating and selecting a CAD/AVL product to schedule and manage their fixed route, paratransit, and deviated fixed route operations.
2004 - Avail assisted with the implementation, installation, and training of the Transched Transview Computer Aided Registration, Scheduling, and Dispatching System. Avail also worked with ATA to evaluate and select a vehicle and facilities maintenance package to streamline the maintenance operations for both the vehicles and the fixed assets across the 3 operating offices of ATA.
2006 - Avail is managing the installation of Ruggedized Tablet PC's in the vehicles, and the integration of these computers with the CAD/AVL and the vehicle maintenance products. The final system will provide more efficient scheduling of ATA's fleet, improve communications across the large service area, provide timely data collection and reporting, and improve the efficiency of the vehicle and facilities maintenance operations.
