Altoona Metropolitan Transportation Authority - Altoona, PA

Customer Goals: To better serve Amtran’s customers with a predictive arrival system.

The goal of deploying the Smart Bus System at Amtran is to improve customer service by improving the predictability of fixed route service. Amtran’s intent was not only to provide their customer’s real-time information via mobile devices or by their website, but to provide the Amtran staff with immediate, comprehensive information to improve service planning, maintenance and customer service.

Technologies Provided:
Amtran initially contracted with Avail Technologies in August, 2001 to deploy Avail’s Traveler Information System. In May, 2008 Amtran through a competitive procurement process again selected Avail as their vendor of choice for the implementation of a Smart Bus System with real-time traveler information.

Lebanon Transit
County of Lebanon Transit Authority - Lebanon, PA

Customer Goals:
The goal of deploying the Advanced Traveler Information System is to provide the highest level of service possible to riders of LT. The ATIS system will ensure that users of LT’s Harrisburg Express route will be provided real-time departure information at the Allen Biehler Park & Ride.

Technologies Provided:
Lebanon Transit has adopted Avail’s full suite of ITS technologies into its daily operations. This ITS procurement includes voice communications via the countywide two-way radio system and cellular data communications. The ITS adoption also includes integration with Stratagen Adept paratransit software with electronic manifest.

The Rapid
Interurban Transit Partnership - Grand Rapids, MI

Customer Goals:
To adopt hardware and software which will provide the ITP staff with better fleet and service information while helping operators and managers operate the system more efficiently. The hardware and software will also ensure better scheduling and more accurate real-time information for ITP riders.

Technologies Proovided:
Avail seamlessly integrated our solution to the existing Trapeze PASS platform and a Schedule Masters Fixed Route run cutting system. The fixed route vehicles were outfitted with Avail’s full suite of ITS technologies which includes the items listed below. As part of the overall project, the paratransit vehicles now utilize a paperless manifest system, closed mic communications and audible turn-by-turn navigational assistance for drivers. This system also includes dispatch at multiple locations as well as Predictive Departure estimation and dissemination to the web, single point of logon, farebox control, headsign control, “closed mic” voice communications, Automatic Next Stop Annunciation, Automatic Passenger Counting and a covert alarm and microphone for emergency situations.  System acceptance and 30 day operational period were completed in August 2008.

The Bus
Butler Transit Authority - Butler, PA

Customer Goals:
The original impetus for this project was to better serve BTA’s customers with a predictive arrival system and to improve data collection and analysis capabilities. The goal of deploying the Smart Bus System at BTA is to improve customer service by improving the predictability of fixed route service and providing detailed ridership and operating data for route analysis. This goal is approached both from an improvement in reliability and consistency of service, as well as an information accessibility standpoint for our customers.  It is our intent to not only provide customers access to real time information, by mobile device or by our website, but to provide internet access on the vehicles. This project will also provide BTA staff with immediate, comprehensive information to improve service planning, maintenance and customer service.
Technologies Provided:
Butler Transit Authority is a small system and faces many of the same challenges as a larger agency, but with very limited staffing. In an effort to provide their riders the best possible riding experience the entire Avail Technologies suite of products was procured as part of their project.

Sunline
Sunline Transit Agency - Palm Springs, CA

Customer Goals:
The purpose of this project is to procure an integrated hardware and software solution featuring Automatic Vehicle Location, Computer Aided Dispatch, Mobile Data Computers, Automatic Passenger Counters, Automatic Voice Annunciation, and other related technologies that will meet Sunline’s needs today and integrate with existing and planned future systems.

Technologies Provided:
Sunline’s overall solution includes Avail’s suite of Advanced Transit Information System (ATIS) products. The system is utilizing the existing conventional radio system for both voice (closed mic) and data communications and an 802.11G network for bulk in-vehicle data downloads. Avail’s DataPoint reporting software is providing management with the information they need to make key operational decisions for schedule adherence, farebox data and APC data. The overall solution also includes an interface to Trapeze FX, Trapeze OPS, Trapeze PASS (MON) paratransit software and the installation of Mobile Data Computers with electronic manifest for the paratransit fleet.

Votran
Volusia County Transit - South Daytona Beach, FL

Customer Goals:
The goals of this project are to provide a higher level of service to the riding public of Volusia County, improve the operational efficiencies of Votran and to provide drivers a single point of log-on to all in-vehicle peripherals.

Technologies Provided:
Votran identified three major focus areas to address when deploying their ITS technology solution:  paratransit scheduling software, a new two-way radio system and fixed route CAD/AVL technologies.  The paratransit in-vehicle equipment now includes mobile data computers, navigational assistance and electronic manifest integrated with Trapeze PASS. The fixed route suite includes mobile data computers, annunciators, APC’s, internal signs and a single point of logon to the existing farebox system and headsigns.  Avail also installed passenger information signs at Votran’s 2 major transfer facilities to provide real-time departure information to passengers. Real-time passenger information is also available via the web. To help Votran make use of all of the data that is now being collected from the vehicles, Avail installed its DataPoint reporting tool.  This tool provides analysis of farebox and passenger count data through drill down charts and operational summary reports on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.

Having provided similar solutions in over 30 different agencies within the market, Avail provided the proven performance Wichita Transit was looking for at an affordable cost.

River Valley Transit
Williamsport Bureau of Transportation - Williamsport, PA

Customer Goals:
RVT was looking for a solution that would provide a RVT with a management tool that could cross check data from the farebox system with financial reports and ridership reports.

Technologies Prvidred:
As Avail’s very first customer RVT deployed Avail’s original TIS system in 1999 and continued to utilize the system through 2009.  Upgrades to the original system were implemented during this time period to enhance the functionality.  However, recognizing the need for a more powerful tool, RVT sought to find a more complete ITS software system that had the ability to provide real-time passenger information and operational improvements across the system.

Working with Avail Technologies, Inc., RVT began utilizing Avail’s full suite of ITS technologies.  Avail’s ITS solution allows RVT personnel and passengers to benefit from real-time route and schedule information.  RVT on-road supervisors and dispatchers are utilizing the technologies to monitor schedule adherence, trip loads and systems checks.  The RVT Management Team and Planning Department are utilizing DataPoint for operational analysis to monitor ridership and fare trends.  Avail was able to tie all these systems together into a central database.

RabbitTransit
York County Transportation Authority - York, PA

Customer Goals:
The primary goal of deploying various technologies at rabbittransit is to improve customer service. This goal is approached both from an improvement in reliability and consistency of service, as well as an information accessibility standpoint for our customers.

Technologies Provided:
Rabbittransit procured Avail’s fully integrated Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) for both the fixed route and paratransit operations. Avail seamlessly integrated our solution to the existing Trapeze PASS platform (MON) and the Trapeze F/X (MON) run cutting system. As part of the overall solution, Avail also procured the Trapeze PASS-IVR module. Voice and data communication is provided utilizing Motorola CDM750’s on rabbittransit’s entire fleet with exception of the YCTA Express. YCTA Express (commuter service to Harrisburg, PA) buses utilize CDM750’s solely for voice communication and cellular modems for data communications over the public data network, providing seamless data connectivity on the Express buses as they travel to, from and within the city of Harrisburg.
